eero Pro Review

Having a slow Internet connection can be a frustrating and downright miserable experience, especially if you’re using an application that needs a lot of bandwidth or are working on a tight deadline. That’s why I’ve began to review different Wi-Fi routers in hopes of finding one with lightning speed. In this article, I’m taking a look at the eero Pro, a combination router/ range extender available for $199. I’ll go over the eero Pro’s design, features, app, and of course how it does in several speed tests. Is it obvious I’m obsessed? Let’s get started with this — and see why!

Pros and Cons of the eero Pro

Let’s start with some basic pros and cons.

Pros

  • Good coverage: Especially when used with the eero Beacon, this device can cover up to 1,500 square feet, depending on the layout of your home.
  • Easy setup: Just plug in your eero Pro and you’re good to go, with setup in the app finished in a matter of minutes.
  • User-friendly mobile app: It was easy to manage multiple users, see which devices are online and perform speed tests in the eero app.

Cons

  • Only one ethernet port: I wish there were more than one ethernet port on the eero Pro, or any on the eero beacon.

Like most Wi-Fi routers, the eero Pro isn’t doing anything in crazy in terms of aesthetics. It’s a white, square shape with rounded edges that plugs into power. Now, this device is both a router and a range extender in one, so if you want to scale your system to cover more ground, you can simply pair it with other eero Pros, eero Beacons, or any first generation routers from the company.

Now, when it comes to range, I was getting conflicting information. On the eero website, the eero Pro’s range is listed as 1,750 feet, but it’s listed at 1,500 on Amazon, so that’s what I’m going with. That’s why you have to try things out for yourselves, folks!

If you’re concerned about security, you’ll appreciate that the eero Pro has WPA2 encryption built-in. What is that exactly? Well, that acronym stands for Wi-Fi Protected Access. Basically, it protects your data and makes sure that only authorized users are accessing your Wi-Fi network. This is the exact same technology that the government uses, implemented by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and it’s how you’ll set up your Wi-Fi password. Sounds great to me!

Keep in mind that eero automatically updates its devices, although you’ll be notified of any new releases. Now, if you want even more security, you can pay a bit extra with eero Secure.

This will give you parental controls and protect you against phishing and malware for either $2.99 a month or $29.99 annually. For even more protection, eero Secure+ adds on a subscription to Encrypt.me, the anti-virus software Malwarebytes and 1Password, one of my favorite password managers. That costs $99.99 a year.

Finally, the eero Pro works with Alexa, so you can speak to it through your Echo Dot speaker.

How Fast Is The eero Pro?

Internet speed differs based on a large number of factors, including your location, but I’m going to share the results of my speed tests using eero Pro.

Unfortunately, it didn’t use anything beyond Wi-Fi 5, not taking advantage of Wi-Fi 6. But connecting through walls, it actually performed better than the Nest Wi-Fi system, which I found surprising.

The eero App

The eero app gives you a ton of great features, including:

  • Managing devices on the Wi-Fi network
  • Performing speed tests
  • Viewing activity
  • Schedule and pause Wi-Fi
  • Create safe filters for Internet usage.

I can see the last two features being really great particularly if you have kids.

The app itself is highly rated with a 3.8 from iPhone users and a 4.2 from Android users. Android-user Charles Breland wrote in a recent five-star review,

“Easy! Great connections all over the house. Had dead zones all over before. Setup was a snap.”

Recap of the eero Pro

So is the eero Pro a great choice for your Wi-Fi router?

I’d go with the eero Pro if you want…

  • Scalability: Simply buy more eero devices to extend your high-speed Internet throughout your home.
  • Highly-rated apps: Both iPhone and Android users liked using the eero app to control their Wi-Fi.
  • Controls for kids: Schedule and pause your Wi-Fi, or create filters so that your kids can’t access anything inappropriate online.

But avoid it if you wanted…

  • Smart platform integrations: If you wanted a Wi-Fi router that works with Alexa or Google Assistant, then the eero Pro is certainly not for you.
  • More color options: Like most Wi-Fi routers, the eero Pro isn’t available in any fun colors.

As usual, leave any questions below. Thanks for reading and have a great day!

FAQs

What is the difference between the eero and the eero Pro?

Jumping off of it’s predecessor the eero, the eero Pro has a third radio, meaning you can connect more devices at speeds twice as fast.

How much is eero Wi-Fi a month?

There are no monthly fees to use eero, as you’ll pay for Internet through your Internet Service Provider.

Is eero the best mesh Wi-Fi?

It depends what you’re looking for. I’d recommend eero to someone who wants fast speeds, scalability, and a highly-rated app, but it’s not good for some that wants smart platform integrations.
