Nest Wifi Review

Having a smart home with a slow WiFi network is sort of like having a Ferrari but being stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Sure, you have tons of capabilities and horse power at your command, but if you can’t actually use it, then what’s the point?

That’s why I’m super excited to try out Google Nests’ latest WiFi router, appropriate named Nest Wifi. The company claims that this router is twice as powerful as it’s predecessor Google Wifi, with twice the speed and up to 25% better coverage. Of course, I’m not going to take their word for it, which is why I wrote this Nest Wifi review in the first place. After vigorous testing, I’ll explain Nest Wifi’s design, features, speeds, and app, evaluating who should buy it and who should steer clear. Let’s get started!

This router and range extender jump beyond what the average person expects out of their Wi-Fi system, with Google Assistant integration and attractive color choices.

The two-pack of Nest Wifi that I bought contains a router and a point, (basically a range extender), although you can buy more points if you wish to scale for more coverage.

With just one point, you’ll get about 3,800 square feet of coverage, which I know is way more than I need in my tiny Brooklyn apartment. Aesthetically, Nest Wifi is attractive, with it’s rounded edges and cool color options (specifically snow, sand and mist). Like most routers, the Nest version will plug into a modem.

One really cool thing about Nest Wifi is that it’s made out of recycled materials. The router is made of 45% post-consumer recycled plastic while the point enclosure is 40%. As someone that buys a ton of electronic devices, I appreciate the nod to environmentalism, which at times can seem like the enemy of consumerism. But hey, this isn’t a liberal arts college class!

Nest Wifi Features

Aside from connecting you to Wi-Fi with customizable points throughout your home, the Nest Wifi also contains the exact same speaker as the Nest Mini, plus Google Assistant. Basically, this product is the exact same device as the Nest Mini, but it also gives you Wi-Fi. That means that, through your Wifi router and points, you can ask Google Assistant to play music, tell you what’s coming up in your day, or even remind you to brush your teeth. Although this product is pretty expensive at $269 for a two-pack, this added bonus is definitely a game changer.

How Fast Is Nest Wifi?

If we’re talking about Wifi networks, speed has to be part of the conversation. I tested Nest Wifi out on two different servers, Starry, Inc. and Natural Wireless, from my office in Brooklyn, New York. I also tested it out on my own network, and with everyone else in the office. My computer is a 2017 Retina iMac using macOS Catalina version 10.15.1. Obviously, my Internet was a lot faster when it was just me, but you can see the exact speeds below.

Internet speed is tricky because it depends on so many different factors, but in general, Nest Wifi made things pretty fast for me, so I’m happy with the speed.

Nest Wifi Setup

Setting up Nest Wifi
Setting up Nest Wifi

The most confusing thing about setting up Nest Wifi? Knowing which app to use. Hint: It’s the Google Home app, not the Google Wifi app as I thought— I know, confusing. But once you figure that out, the process is a breeze. In the app, choose your account, home, allow the app location access and it will look for the Nest Wifi. Then, it’ll pop up, and you can either create a new network or add it to an existing network. I chose new!

Then, I gave the app permission to use my camera and scanned the QR code on the bottom of the Nest Wifi. After connecting to Wifi, I named my network, created a password, and was prompted to adjust my settings. Overall, the process was really easy and the app guides you through everything step-by-step.

The Google Home App

The Google Home app, which has a four star rating on the Google Play store and a 4.5 star rating on the Apple store, gives you a ton of capabilities such as:

  • Set up and manage networks, change passwords
  • Share WiFi networks and passwords with guests (you can even have them show up on your Nest smart display, like the Google Nest Hub)
  • Prioritize devices so they get more speed
  • Test network speed
  • Manage WiFi of multiple homes, which may come in handy if you want to help out your elderly parents with their Internet
  • Set WiFi schedules, pause WiFi or block adult content.

The Nest Wifi is a great choice for a ton of different people, from parents of teenagers who want to limit their screen time to an older couple that needs some help from their adult child in setting up and using the Internet. Regardless of who you are, customizations are always welcome.

Recap of the Nest Wifi

Nest Wifi and Components
Nest Wifi and Components

Overall, I really like Nest Wifi, especially for it’s design. By having one router and many points, you spread the connection out through the house. Plus, I love how much control you have over your Wifi, making this product particularly great for those trying to limit their children’s screen time.

I’d buy Nest Wifi if you’d like…

  • Scalability: If you need more coverage, simply buy more points, which are discounted in larger packs.
  • Ability to limit and pause WiFi: Rather than having to unplug your Wifi router to limit Internet use, do it from the Google Home app.
  • Environmentally-friendly design: I appreciate Nest’s use of post-consumer recycled plastic.

But avoid it if you don’t want…

  • High price: At $269 for a two pack and $349 for a three pack, Nest Wifi certainly isn’t the most affordable product of it’s kind.
